Ahh dealerships, they can be fun to talk to. After finding out that the car I was going up to test drive in a few days was sold last night (it is what it is, didn’t put a deposit down) the salesman asks me to let me know if there’s anything I’d be interested. I tell him I’d be interested in a E90/92 M3 with reasonable miles for under $40k. He comes back with “we got a red 13 M3, alittle north of $40k, take a look on the website!”.

Skeptical but interested, I come across a red ‘13 M3 with 18k miles and competition package for $49,988 ... just a little north of $40k.

Beautiful car though:

Considering that dealerships usually mark up the prices on their web ads by about a third, that sounds reasonable. Offer him $38k and go from there.

Just north after negotiation.

But not the M3 you wanted.

You think you could get this dealer down to even $42k from $50k? I’ve bought two cars from them already, they aren’t going down that far. Maybe $46k ... maybe.

Wanna buy a white on fox red ZCP E92 M3 6MT? Everyone in my area seems to already have moved on to the F8x market and now there’s tons of M3’s for sale.

Oof, that red one is the sex though! Competition package too! You said 40k, they said 50k. I bet you can make a deal closer to your side of the fence.

Seems you’re not alone. Others are saying the same. I don’t think they’d go lower than $46k.

Ahh...it is good to know that even a dealer trying to sell the car has a hard time keeping the rims clean! Those things are a pain to clean.

Getting winter tires for those rims is also an adventure!

However, it says Manual transmission? Er...no.

But as it isn’t over 4 years old, there should be a bit of warranty left on the beast. I had to redo my warranty on my 2011 E92 M3 last year.

Car buyers, I have compiled a very basic translator for dealer language!

“Under $40k” = $39,990 + taxes

“Right around $40k” = $49,990 + taxes

You might be right, but you never know. Dealers will do anything to sell you a car. If you set your number and are prepared to walk away, they will most likely chase after you if you do.

When I bought my 2008 E90 M3 (November 2013) I said to the salesman “No one is dumb enough to buy this car, it’s a 4.5 year old V8 M3. Most people in the market for these cars can and would rather buy new. At this price point and mileage (5ok miles, $40k) it’s out of reach for most of the younger crowd that would want a used M3...so sell it to me for 32k!”. He said 36k, I said that I would have to sleep on it. I didn’t even get out the door before he offered 33k. I was $1000 underwater on my trade, so I said “if you take care of the difference on the Jetta, we have a deal”. He did, and I bought it.

I’ve since traded it, but I loved it. I was not up to owning another M3 out of warranty:/

The M3 was a gift for my dad’s 60th from my brother and I. The intent was for him to track it on the weekends and daily it but he doesn’t have the time, and he doesn’t want to rack up miles dailying it. I “bought out” my brother and DD’d it for a little but I have a 335i that does much better on my commute (DC traffic).

The current plan is to sell it, get dad a manual wrangler, sell my C300 and 328i, just drive the 335i through winter, and then I get to get a fun car.. No idea what’s next! I really want to find my dream lemans blue E39 M5.

I’ve only gotten to drive rather beat up E39 M5’s.. And even those drive nicely! The E39 M5 has just been a dream car for a long time. If I sold everything, ate ramen for a bit, and found a nice 997.2 GTS I would totally jump on it.. I’d have to daily it but that’s a car that could make me smile every day.

I’ve kicked around a few 997’s as well, but I have never found the right one. it’s always been the right car/wrong price, or the other way around.

Kinja'd!!!0

Totally understandable. With all these great car choices (Alfa, F-type, M-whatever, 911, Cayman, etc.) it really takes a lot of thinking.. I’ve even been throwing around the idea of getting a new STI because the depreciation is so slow on them. I could drive it and if I don't like it or if my dream car pops up, I won't be out very much if any at all.

Kinja'd!!! Tripper > AM3R shamefully returns
12/22/2015 at 16:28

Kinja'd!!!1

Almost did a new STi as well lol, when shopping the S3. I had an 04 STi and I did nothing but get speeding tickets for the 7 months that I owned it. The main deterrent was the styling though. I was 21 when I had the STi before, I’m 31 now and that wing just can’t come to the office with me.

You’re right though, so many good cars out there. My E46 M3 is the only car I have been patient about buying. The perfect car just about fell into my lap at the perfect time, here’s to hoping the same happens with a 997 in the not so distant future.

12/22/2015 at 16:36

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah I really worry about the STI and tickets.. I live in VA after all lol. S3 is a sweet car, really love that blue they come in.

Just gotta be patient, I keep telling myself that since it’s winter anyways I shouldn’t rush myself into buying a car. And I looove E46 M3’s. Just had to throw that out there lol.

I bet there is a lot of wiggle room on the price... but the price doesn’t seem too far off the mark given the low mileage and year.

Maybe have a look at this instead:

That blue was super tough to get lol, they held my deposit for almost two weeks waiting on a blue one with the adjustable dampers. Which is what got me to the Subaru dealer.

The STi just can’t be driven slow, by anyone, ever. Even my mother managed to get a ticket when I let her take it to work one day.

Yea winter is tough, I bought the E46 in January of 07 and almost smacked it up during the first snow storm. Will be pumped to hear about it when you get serious.

I’m still figuring that out, I’m getting a quote from a dealer on a trade in as a base-line. It’s a 2013 with 22k and some change on it. M-performance exhaust but otherwise stock. I also have a set of 219M’s as a spare set, but I switched the tires out for something that would fit on my 328i. I’d say around mid/high 40’s-50k. The market isn't too great for sellers around me though, so it could go either way.

Just great - it’s been so nice here that I drove to work with the sunroof open this morning! I just changed up my tune to get rid of the cold start, and I’m glad I did (makes it a little nicer for my neighbors in the morning and my parking garage mates in the evening, and smooths the initial idle out a lot). I’ve got the BPM Stage II tune, and one of the other great features he throws in is a Servotronic tune that lessens the assist from the steering rack. I love it, you can feel everything on the road through the steering wheel and it’s got a nice weight as well.

I took a new job a few months back, so my commute is more highway than it was before, and I’m enjoying it and getting better mileage (used to get around 15, now am getting 18).

My extended warranty (EasyCare TotalCare) expires in a month; I’m on the fence about seeing how much it would cost me to get coverage to 100k or just let it go. The last Blackstone report I got was nice and clean; hopefully I got a good one that will pull strong until 200k!

If it’s only around ~$2500 for the extended warranty, I’d go for it. The S65 as you know is pretty stout. I really want to keep this and drive it to 150k (honestly, been a dream since I was a young teen to have an M3) but now just isn’t the time. I need to get a house with a garage before I can do something like that.

Mods really wake up the E9x M3. I thought the ZCP was perfect, couldn’t find any faults in it, until a local enthusiast took me for a ride in his VF supercharged E90 with a beautifully tuned set of KW V3’s. Just goes to show how awesome the E9x is!

As much fun as it'd be to keep the car, you're smart to focus on the house first. I waited until I was 34 to get mine!

Kinja'd!!! davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com > AM3R shamefully returns
12/23/2015 at 19:56

Kinja'd!!!1

I try to get to the track at least a couple times a year, and the only things I’ve changed so far are pads (StopTech Street Performance), fluid (ATE), tires (PSS) and test pipes & tune for a power bump. It’s incredibly capable from the factory and I know improving as a driver is the best “mod” I can do for now. I'm a little hesitant to change too much, as I drive it most days and don't want to make it overly harsh for the street.

Kinja'd!!! AM3R shamefully returns > davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com
12/23/2015 at 20:01

Kinja'd!!!0

Makes sense. I never got the chance to track the M but I did auto cross it once. Incredibly capable. The only thing that needed to be improved was my driving! They really don't need much done to them. IMO lighter wheels, better sounding exhaust, and some really good tires are all that are really needed for a car that won't really be tracked while not costing an arm and a leg and comprising missing the usability.
